Drop the Charges and Divest Now: an Open Letter to The Ohio State University Administrators and Decision Makers

The following letter was first issued by Ohio Youth for Climate Justice on February 15, 2024, in solidarity with students facing repression for their pro-Palestine organizing efforts at OSU. If you wish to add your signature to the letter, you can do so by filling out this form.

Ohio community gathers in solidarity with Palestine. The image is blurred and tinted purple.

Dear President Walter E. “Ted” Carter, The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, Office of Investments, Student Conduct, University Conduct Board, and the entire Office of Student Life,

We, the undersigned, write to you as concerned students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to demand that The Ohio State University:

  • Drop all charges against pro-Palestine organizers and dismiss any potential sanctions against student organizers and organizations,
  • Commit to upholding the right to freedom of speech and assembly on Ohio State’s campus, and
  • Take immediate steps to divest OSU’s endowment from israeli companies, international companies on the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) list, and the fossil fuel industry.

As you know, on January 25, 2024, three Ohio Youth for Climate Justice (OHYCJ) organizers– Hannah, Yousuf, and Jerry — protested OSU’s investments in fossil fuels and israeli apartheid during President Carter’s speech at an “All Staff Wellness Event.”

Despite President Carter’s statement that he is proud to “allow this type of protest at The Ohio State University,” OSU’s Student Conduct office issued Hannah, Yousuf, and Jerry formal summonses, claiming their behavior at the event could be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Following a preliminary hearing, the students were unduly charged with ‘unreasonably disruptive conduct’ simply for exercising their freedom of speech. The student organizers now await their hearings in front of the students, staff, and faculty of the University Conduct Board.

For 75 years, Palestinians have lived under brutal occupation by the israeli settler colonial state. A nearly 17-year-long siege has trapped over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza with conditions that António Guterres, Secretary-General of the U.N., compared to “hell on earth.” Since October 2023, Palestinians in Gaza have been indiscriminately bombed by the israeli occupation forces (IOF). Over the past few days, israel has escalated even further by launching an offensive on Rafah, the last “safe zone” in the Gaza Strip. Over 30,000 Palestinians have been murdered by the IOF throughout the past four and a half months. Both the International Court of Justice and a U.S. federal court have ruled that israel’s conduct constitutes plausible genocide.

In addition to facing existential israeli violence, Palestine is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world though it is responsible for less than 0.01% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, Palestine is repeatedly blocked from receiving climate funds and adaptation resources because of israeli occupation.

A recent study found that in just two months of senseless bombing, israel’s genocide in Gaza produced at least 281,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide– more than the annual carbon emissions of 20 climate-vulnerable nations combined. Israel’s system of apartheid and settler colonialism is maintained and exacerbated by the fossil fuel industry. On October 30, six fossil fuel companies accepted licenses from israel to extract oil and gas off the coast of Gaza amidst ongoing IOF bombardment.

But OSU is no mere witness to the ongoing genocide in Palestine and the fossil fuel industry’s hunger to profit off militarism.

President Carter, Board of Trustees, and Office of Investments, you sustain israel’s genocide in Gaza by continuing to invest Ohio State’s endowment in israeli companies and international companies on the BDS list. Your investments grant the fossil fuel industry social license to continue endless extraction, even amidst ongoing genocide.

It would be morally wrong, unjust, and unreasonable for Ohio State students to sit idly by as your financial holdings murder millions of people across the globe.

For the past three years, Ohio Youth for Climate Justice has campaigned for fossil fuel divestment and publicly supported OSU Students for Justice in Palestine’s calls for divestment from companies complicit in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. You have received countless emails, letters, and phone calls from our organizers and supporters. You have seen the passage of Undergraduate Student Government Legislation supporting our goals. You have even met with us. Yet you refuse to take action.

It would have been unreasonable for Ohio Youth for Climate Justice to decide not to protest President Carter’s speech.

To the University Conduct Board, we humbly ask that you take all this into consideration when hearing and deciding upon the cases of Hannah, Yousuf, and Jerry.

To Student Conduct and the entire Office of Student Life, we remind you that punishing student protest is a dangerous precedent that often leads to violations of students’ constitutional rights to speech and assembly.

And finally, to President Carter, The Board of Trustees, and the Office of Investments, we demand that you take immediate action to divest OSU’s endowment from israeli companies, international companies on the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) list, and the fossil fuel industry.

If you suppress one member of our movement, a hundred more will rise up in solidarity.
